The Benefits of Memorizing Passages Over Individual Verses

Though memorizing Scripture is always time well spent, whether random verses or complete passages, I want to tell you the benefits of memorizing a passage over individual verses.

1. As Janet Pope notes, “Instead of memorizing fragments of Scripture, you can memorize God’s whole truth fit together the way God intended.”
2. Memorizing an entire Psalm, chapter, or book of the Bible puts your verses allows you to memorize the context of your verses.

3. It’s easier to memorize several verses that go together, than random verses.

For instance, Psalm 23 is six verses. It is much easier to memorize these six verses than six random verses about the Lord being our shepherd.

If you have never memorized a passage of the Bible, I highly encourage it. Though it may feel overwhelming to memorize several verses rather than individual verses, just know whether you memorize a passage or individual verses both are done by memorizing one verse at a time. 1. I agree with you, Brooke! I used to be intimidated at the thought of memorizing a chunk of verses, but it's easier when the verses flow together. And getting the context is helpful for my understanding as well. Thanks for sharing this.

    1. Lisa, I totally hear you. I used to feel totally intimidated about memorizing a chunk of scripture until I read it could be done in Janet Pope's book "His Word in My Heart." She has inspired me to memorize various chapters of the Bible and has given me the confidence that even memorizing a book of the Bible can be done. I hope by the end of this year I'll have my first book memorized! :)God bless you!

  2. This is great! I was just telling a friend about memorizing passages. It has been easier for me to do it this way. And it also helps me to really get the meaning behind the passage instead of just saying the words.

    1. Thanks Joyce! That's neat you and your friend were just talking about this! I find it much easier too. Your right, it really helps understand the verses within the context of the passage. God bless your time hiding His Word in your heart!

Thank you for taking the time to share. May God bless you richly!
