Psalm 103 Memory Challenge: How High and Wide is God's Mercy for Us!

At week six, we are halfway through the Psalm 103 Summer Memory Challenge! The time has gone by so fast. This week I was so encouraged by all the fantastic promises of God to us we've hidden in our heart as we memorized the first ten verses of Psalm 103.

Let me tell you, this Psalm gets even better! This week we are going to be amazed for the height and width of God's mercy for us described in Psalm 103:11-12

The Psalmist David tells us:
For as the heavens are high above the earth, so great is His mercy toward those who fear Him;
As far as the east is from the west, so far has He removed our transgressions from us. Psalm 103:11-12
I like how one of the commentators put it at Precept Austin (one of my favorite Bible study sites!).
"As the heaven is high above the earth! As far as is east from west!--These are the largest measurements which imagination can conceive. But they are all too small for the purpose of the Psalmist, in his desire to describe the impossibility of forgiven sin coming back on the soul."

As you hide Psalm 103:11-12 in your hear this week, something that might help you memorize these verses is to remember verse 11 describes how high God's mercy is for us (height) while verse 12 describes how wide His mercy is for us. (width)

The Height of God's Mercy for Us

I encourage you next time you go outside, look straight up and consider how high, how great is God's mercy for you. As I look up into the sky, I am overwhelmed by the incredible height of God's mercy He has for me.

Third Day--Your Love Oh Lord

Pastor Chuck Smith explains, "As high is the heavens is above the earth." Now there is some scientific discussion as to just how high that might be. And every once in awhile the scientists come along and say, "Oh, we've just discovered a new quasar, or galaxy that is beyond anything we've ever known before. It is out there, eight billion light years away, ten billion light years away." All right, keep searching man; you're only expanding the mercy of my God. "For as high as the heavens are above the earth, so high is His mercy over those that reverence Him."I don't know how high the heaven is above the earth, but however it is, that's just how high God's mercy is towards me." Smith, Chuck. "Psalm 101-106." The Word for Today. Blue Letter Bible.

How Wide is God's Mercy for Us

"And as far as the east is from the west, so far has he removed our transgressions from us." (Psalm 103:12).

 Casting Crowns--East to West

Regarding Psalm 103:12 Pastor Chuck Smith goes on to say in his teaching on Psalm 103, "Interesting that he said as far as the east is from the west, rather than as far the north is from the south. Because the north is only about 12,500 miles from the south. You can only go north until you get to the North Pole, then you are going south. And as soon as you get to the South Pole, you are going north again. The distance of about 12,500 miles, that is, unless you are going straight through. But you can start off tonight flying east, and you'll fly east the rest of your life, if you don't change directions. Or you can start flying due west, and you'll be flying west the rest of your life. So I'm glad that he said as far as the east is from the west, rather than as far as the north is from the south, because I want my sins farther away than the north from the south. I like the east and the west bit. I like God just removing completely my sins, my guilt from me. Because of His mercy."

Online people have asked, "How far east can you go before you're heading west?" While one could honestly ask how far south can you go before you're heading north, when it comes to east and west, there are no definitive poles like north and south. East and west are continual. Someone once said, "If you're going east, you're going east. You're never going west unless you turn around." That's how wide God's mercy is towards us. It is continual with no end.

This week I pray your heart is so blessed as you set your mind on how high and wide God's mercy is towards us.
 Just for this Week...
